Wednesday, August 2, 1961, The News Texan:
Funeral services for James E. Witherspoon, 90, retired rural mail carrier, who died here late Monday, will be held at 3pm Wednesday in the First Presbyterian Church. Rev. David M. Hubler, pastor, will officiate, assisted by Rev. J. M. Dickey. Burial will be in Southland.

Witherspoon, known throughout the area as "Uncle Jim", had been confined to his bed for the past year. He made his home with a daughter, Mrs. C. E. Milam, 1104 Small St. It was there that he died.

A resident of Grand Prairie for over 60 years, Witherspoon is believed to be the first RFD carrier in the county. He was offered the job of carrying the mail out thru Irving, to Estelle seven miles South of Grapevine, back almost to Euless. This was at a time when such mail service was still in the experimental stage in this area, Witherspoon once recalled.

During the 31 years he carried the mail before his retirement, he developed lasting friendships with his patrons along the route. At one of his birthday celebrations, he told of the many times he was invited to stop for Christmas dinner "before the Post Office Department finally let us start taking Christmas off".

Witherspoon was a member of First Presbyterian Church and had served as an elder until his illness. He was also an early day school board member, serving at the time when GPHS was built. Survivors are four daughters, two sons, six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and two brothers.
