Elder James Buchanan Dallas was the son of Arthur G. Dallas & Permelia Leftwich both born & raised in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. He was the last child born of their 7 children. His siblings were in birth order: "Unnamed" (died at 2 1/2 weeks), Emily Ann (died at age 10), Arthur T. (died at age 18), Mary (died at 7 months), Virginia Permelia "Jennie" (lived to be 76), and Charles "Charlie" H. (died at age 20)

He had two half siblings from his fathers 1st marriage. They were Robert Green Dallas, who fought in the civil war and later died at age 31, and Nancy Susanah Elizabeth Dallas who lived to be 70.

Therefore, he and his sister, "Jennie", were the only children from his father's 2nd marriage to live a long life.

He spent most of his life on his farm near Swansonville, Virginia

James "Buck" was a member of Sugartree Primitive Baptist Church. Later he wsa elected clerk. He was ordained as a minister and given the title of Elder in the Primitive Baptist Church on 05 Nov 1892 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia at Sugartree Primitive Baptist Church. He was 38 at the time. Then after several years of faithful service, he was elected pastor in which capacity he served for many years according to the church records in the possession of Frank Keatts who lives in Pittsylvania County, Virginia.

The site of the present Sugartree Church is on land donated to the church by "Buck" Dallas. It has been located on three different sites, all within a mile of each other.

He married Ella May Aldredge, who was originally from Logan, West Virginia and now Danville, Virginia, on 30 Jun 1908 when he was 53. Together they were blessed with two sons, Paul Arthur born in 1910 & Silas James Buchanan born in 1913. The youngest who was named after him followed in his father's footsteps years after his death to become a Primitive Baptist Minister as well. His sons were only 18 and 15 at the time of his death.

"Buck" worked as a Farmer and a Church Minister throughout his life while living in Tunstall, Pittsylvania County, Virginia.

He died at his home 04 Feb 1928, extension North Main Street, at 12:45 p.m from a complication of diseases, he suffering a paralytic stroke only a few hours before his death. He was 74. The funeral was conducted from the home of Mrs. William Aldredge (his mother-in-law) 1902 North Main Street at 4:30 in the afternoon on 05 Feb 1928 by Elder J.H. Wilson. Interment followed at Highland Burial Park Cemetery in Danville, Pittsylvania County, Virginia.

Elder Dallas was devoted to his home and family and had a kind and genial disposition toward all.

Gravesite Details

The name Buchanan was spelled Buchannan on the gravestone possibly in error, however it has always been used by the family with only one "N"
