John E. Powlen was born on November 19, 1948 in Logansport, IN to Raymond and Jessie (Myers) Powlen in Lucerne, IN. He passed away peacefully in McKinney, TX on October 4, 2022.

John grew up in Lucerne, IN, where he was a stranger to no one. As a member of 4H, he was known as the funniest guy in town and charmed everyone he met. After graduating from Pioneer High School, John attended Oakland City College then later worked at Rockwell Standard spring plant with his father.

He moved to Dallas, TX in 1970 and found his passion working with people through the wine and spirits business. He was able to use his charm and magnetism in an industry he truly enjoyed. John was always the life of the party. His favorite pastime was going to midget car races with his brothers Bill and Sam. The tradition of attending the Chili Bowl every year was something he looked forward to most. He also enjoyed gambling at the casinos- pulling the slot machines, playing cards and rolling dice. John was an active member of the United Methodist Church where he enjoyed serving in the Clown ministry. He also served as a magician in the Adventure Guides with his daughter. There was always a buzz in the air when he was around.

John's greatest joy was his daughter and grandsons. He was always an active member in their lives through going to sporting events, sharing meals together and talking through important life lessons.

John is survived by one daughter; two grandsons; and two brothers. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service was on October 7, 2022 in the sanctuary at First United Methodist Church, 315 N. Church St. McKinney, TX 75069 with Rev. Stacey Piyakhun officiating. John will be laid to rest at a gravesite service officiated by Rev. Tim Minnick at Indian Creek Christian Church Cemetery, 3545 W. 800 N., Royal Center, IN at 1:30 PM on March 7, 2023. Following the burial, there will be a Celebration of Life at 2:00 PM at The Hall across from the fire station in Lucerne.
