3018 Corporal A E (or A S) Maycock, 2nd Battalion the (Duke of Cambridge's Own) Middlesex Regiment. He deployed with his battalion to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the Avondale on 2 Dec 1899, and arrived at the Cape about the 25 Dec 1899. They were sent round to Durban. Along with the 2nd Dorsetshire Regiment and 2nd Somerset Light Infantry they formed the 10th Brigade under Major General Talbot Coke, part of the Ladysmith relief force. They fought at Venter's Spruit and Spion Kop between 20-24 Jan 1900 where they lost 23 killed and 65 wounded. Corporal Maycock was one of those killed at Spion Kop in the operations on the Upper Tugela, about 6 miles east of Acton Homes, on 24 Jan 1900. He was buried on the battlefield.
