COURIER JOURNAL OBITUARY – 03/01/2023
John Howard Cummings, 80, passed away peacefully in his home on February 26th, 2023, after a long battle with dementia. John was born in Mitchellville, TN, in 1942, to Josephine Brown (deceased) and Lester (Duke) Cummings (deceased). He grew up working on his family's dairy farm alongside his siblings, Charlotte Richey (husband Donald), Wayne Cummings (deceased), and Patricia Batson (deceased). He attended WKU and was a member of the Kentucky National Guard. John began his career at South Central Bell where he started as a lineman and retired as an engineer. After retirement, John always remained active. He spent his free time golfing until he found his true passion, bicycling. He was an avid member of the Louisville Bicycle Club. In 2010, at the age of 67, John completed the 160 mile "Ride Across Indiana" bike ride. As he got older, he could be spotted riding his bicycle through the neighborhood, jamming out to AC/DC with his dog, "Diva", in her very own basket. He had a love of music, which he shared with his children, Adriane and Richard. There were a lot of things John couldn't remember as his dementia progressed, but he always remembered to tell everyone about his beautiful wife, Dorothy (Seng), and how lucky he was to have her taking care of him. A celebration of life will be held on March 7th from 4-9 p.m. at Club K9. There will be food, drinks, laughter and tears. Beginning at 7 p.m., through the remainder of the evening, there will be an open toast where all are welcome to share their favorite memories and stories. 9316 Taylorsville Rd. Louisville, KY 40299. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that John be honored with a donation to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
