Christena Mary Creighton-Murphy passed peacefully on June 15, 2020, with her daughter by her side. Born in Wickham, NB, on April 21st, 1930, she was a daughter of the late Bruce and Vera (London) Morrell.
Chris was raised in Lower Kars and went to the local school until Grade 9, when she transferred to Hampton High School. She graduated in 1946 and went on to Teachers College in Fredericton, the second youngest in her class. After graduating, she taught at Oak Point and Morrisdale, which were one-room schools for grades one through eight. Later, she met and married Elmer Creighton of Dutch Valley, NB, and they operated a Dairy Farm there. She taught at Waterford and Sussex Corner where she taught grades five and six. After a severe heart attack she had to rest for a year, after which she started teaching in the Business Department of Sussex High School. There she taught History, English, and Spelling for grades ten, eleven and twelve, for nine years. She then transferred to the Junior High and taught grade seven, where she remained for the next twenty years.
During 1973 and 1974 Chris was granted a sabbatical leave and went to Fredericton to study at UNB, graduating with a B.T. degree in May 1974. After 35 years of teaching she retired in June 1986, but supply taught in the Junior and Senior High Schools until 1992. She loved teaching and all of her students.
In 2005, Christena married Hudson Murphy.
Over the years she belonged to many organizations, including: LOBA, IODE, Retired Teachers Association of Kings County, secretary of the local NBTA, Children's Wish Foundation, member of the Grievance Committee, sponsor of the Beta Sigma Phi-Omega Chapter. She was the President of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards, for which she was honoured. She was also a member of the Waterford W.I., St. Mark's ACW, 50Plus, Red Hat Society, and St. Mark's Tuesday Night Bible Study.
Chris loved to travel and has been across Canada, parts of the U.S., toured Europe, Russia, Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, Tahiti, and cruised the Caribbean.
Every person who knew Chris cherished her sense of fun. She always had a smile for everyone.
