Obituary for Lawrence Minter Anderson, Sr.
March 10th, 1930-March 1st-2023
Lawrence Minter Anderson, Sr. (Larry) passed from this life to eternal life in Heaven with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ in Memphis, Tennessee on March 1st, 2023, having lived a long and full life of love and service to his Lord, his family and his church. He was 92 years old.
Visitation will be on Thursday, March 9th, from 4:00 to 5:00 pm, at Bellevue Baptist Church, 2000 Appling Road, Cordova, TN in the Chapel. The celebration of Larry's life will begin at 5:00 pm in the Chapel. The private family graveside service will be earlier that day at Arlington Cemetery. A livestream of the memorial service will be available online at bellevue.org/live/community.
Larry Sr. was born in Normal, TN ( on Normal Street, then a suburb of Memphis, now a part of the University of Memphis campus) on March 10th, 1930 to David Minter and Irene Robinson Anderson . He graduated from Tech High School in Memphis, TN. As a young boy, he collected baseball cards, at one time owning an original Babe Ruth trading card. He was also a Boy Scout, and later became a Scout Master, leading his son's Boy Scout troop. Growing up in the Depression era, and during World War II, he was always seeking ways to earn money to help his family. Creative, and with a knack for selling, he would go early on Saturday to the local barber shop and take a prime seat. When the shop grew crowded, he would spot a customer and say, "Would you like my seat, Sir? You can have it for a dime." The customer would happily accept, and Larry had his dime for a movie and popcorn!
His first real paying job, to help put food on the family table was at the Burkhart-WeOna grocery in Memphis. He learned the grocery business well in all aspects, from stocking, to sweeping, to selling. It was the selling part he really loved. His next job, also in the grocery business, was with John Gray and Sons, where he worked with Charlie Babb, whose nephew would one day marry one of Larry's granddaughters. He went from there to the hardware business, selling refrigerators, which were fast replacing the old fashioned ice boxes.
He left Memphis to go to school at Union University in Jackson, TN, where he managed the food stores for the school cafeteria to pay for his tuition and board. When that position was cut due to financial hard times at the school, he returned to Memphis, and entered the old Mid-South Bible Institute. It was here that he first met Rose Mary Partain, and was forever smitten. On their first date, he announced that he was going to marry her, to which she replied, "We'll see about that!" Their romance developed when Rose Mary, who served as the organist at the old Trinity Baptist Church, recruited Larry to teach 4th grade Sunday School. Larry found a new calling, and went on to teach 4th grade Sunday School for over half a century. He and Rose Mary were married on June 1st, 1952, in a lovely outdoor wedding in her mother's flower garden.
Larry's sales career continued, as he sold insurance for National Life and Accident, going on to sell printing for Baber Printing Company. He later moved into specialty advertising with the Decker Company, and then became the Regional Sales Manager at Ancorp National Services (formerly Memphis News Company).
He began his own business, Larry Anderson Associates, in 1972, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year. He loved selling and making his customers happy, and his favorite saying was, "Selling is like shaving-if you don't do a little every day, you're a bum."
Through the years, Larry served the Lord faithfully at Temple Baptist, (where he was saved) Trinity Baptist (where he was licensed to preach), Cherokee Baptist, where he was ordained as a deacon, serving alongside Rose Mary, where she was organist and choir director. They then moved to First Baptist Memphis, where they continued to teach children together, and she continued singing in the choir. Being led of the Lord to be under the ministry of Dr. Adrian Rogers, they moved to Bellevue Baptist Church in 1979, continuing their work with 4th graders and the choir. Larry also served as a deacon for many years.
Larry Sr. was preceded in death by his parents, David and Irene Anderson, his sister, Dorothy, and his dear Rose Mary. Survivors include his son Larry Anderson, Jr. , married to Pam, his daughter, Mary Lea Anderson Tucker and his beloved niece, Lauralan Terrill Grisoni, married to Bernard; his grandchildren-Josh Tucker, married to Annie, Becca Babb, married to Jay, Christen Bresnahan, married to Tim, Larry Anderson III, married to Anna, Mollie Anderson Tatum, married to Ben, David Anderson, Jesse Anderson, Rose Anderson Sidhom, married to Noah, and his great nieces Elise Grisoni and Gabrielle Grisoni. He also leaves behind 18 great-grandchildren: Katie Tucker, James Babb, Caroline Babb, Maric Bresnahan, Jude Bresnahan, Rory Bresnahan, Ethan Anderson, Emma Anderson, Evan Anderson, Ellis Anderson, Eliza Anderson, Daniel Tatum, Sam Tatum, Emily Tatum, Asa Sidhom, August Sidhom, Ellee Sidhom and Meg Sidhom, and many special nephews and nieces.
Larry Anderson, Sr., lived a full, wonderful life, spending his time outside of work and church supporting Rose Mary in her many musical endeavors, and attending countless recitals, concerts, birthday parties and graduations for his grands and great grands. He loved to read history and the Bible, along with a good John Grisham book from time to time. He worked to instill in his grands and great-grands a passion for history and the word of God. His story-telling was legendary, and his fudge was the best.
