Lizzie was born in Jansen Nebraska, the 3rd of 19 children born to Sarah and Peter Rempel. In 1906 the family moved to Meade, Kansas. She was a member of the Emmanuel Mennonite Church. She married Jacob J. Bartel February 10, 1921 . They had ten children. He passed away in January 2, 1959.

She was an avid quilter, and continued making quilts and tying comforters even after she moved to a nursing home. She also enjoyed knitting caps for newborns in the hospital and working large puzzles. She read her German Bible daily. Lizzie loved having company, and according to one daughter "set a grand table."
