The 1860 census shows that he was a farm laborer living in Manheim Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, but he is in the 1863-65 draft registration living in the city of Lancaster. He is in both documents as "Neiman." He stood 5' 6" tall and had dark hair and brown eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the overstated age of eighteen at Camp Wayne in West Chester, Chester County, June 4, 1861, mustered into federal service at Camp Carroll in Baltimore, Maryland, July 26, 1861, as a private with Co. B, 1st Pennsylvania Reserves (30th Pennsylvania Infantry), and honorably discharged at term's end June 13, 1864. He is in the company register and applied for his disability pension as "Nyman."
