Charles Helfrich, a native of Weisenberg township, Lehigh County, was engaged in the mercantile business first at Kutztown and later at Seisholtzville, Berks County. From the latter place he removed to New York City, where he was a commission merchant until his death. During the Civil War he had enlisted from Berks County, in Company G., Seventy-Fourth Regiment and had been mustered into service Feb. 28, 1865, to serve for one year. He was the second lieutenant of his company, and Bates' History under remarks, records the following: Captured - discharged by G. O. May 15, 1865. He died in New York City and is buried in the Cedar Grove Cemetery, Flushing, Queens, New York. He was married to Amelia Hoffman, who died at Allentown, but was buried by the side of her husband in Long Island."

Charles Helffrich, a native of Lehigh County, died at No. 140 West Forty-ninth street, New York, on Sunday, in his 75th year. He was born in Weisenberg township and was a son of the long-deceased Rev. John Helffrich. (This is wrong. He was a son of Daniel Helfrich - DH- 06/27/2012) He was a merchant and conducted stores in Lehigh county up to 1865, when he moved to New York and went into the wholesale produce commission business. The past six years he lived retired, owing to failing health. He was a brother of Benjamin Helffrich, of Lyons Station, and a cousin to Dr. John H. Helffrich, of No. 32 North Sixth street, this city. His wife, nee Amelia Hoffman, is a sister of Eli Hoffman of this city. She survives, with three sons, Daniel P., Dr. Charles H. and James, all of New York City.
