COLONEL RICHARD BEDON SCREVEN was born March 12, 1808, and died March 16, 1851.

He graduated at West Point Military Academy in 1828. He joined the United States Army as Second Lieutenant of the Second Infantry under General Gaines in Florida and was transferred in July , 1831, to the Fourth Infantry stationed at Baton Rouge, where he remained until 1835, when he joined General Gaines again in Florida ,when the war with the Seminoles was going on, remaining in active service until he was ordered to Fort Leavenworth as Indian Agent.

In 1836 , he returned to Florida as First Lieutenant of the Fourth Infantry and was in the Battle of Okee-cho-bee with General Taylor. Later on he joined General Scott in the Cherokee Nation and was selected to take charge of the removal of 3,500 Cherokee Indians to the Territories.

In 1838, as Captain of the Eighth Infantry , he served with General Worth on the Canadian frontier where he served until 1840 in the Winnebago Campaign, after which he was ordered back to Florida.

As ranking officer of the Eighth Infantry when that regiment under General Scott on September 21, 1846 stormed and carried the Heights of Monterey, he was brevetted first as Major, then as Lieutenant-Colonel for gallantry and martial conduct , and, after the Battle of Molino del Rey, September 8, 1847, he was made Colonel.

After the Mexican War, he was on duty in the recruiting service at Albany, New York, until 1851, when on his way to his regiment to take the field again in Texas, he died in New Orleans.

Colonel Screven was tall and strongly built, and he had a singularly attractive countenance.

He married June 27, 1831, Louise Pintard Davidson, born June 28, 1814, died December 24, 1889, daughter of Doctor Richard Davidson and Eliza Noel, daughter of John Pintard, born May 18, 1759, of New York City, and Eliza Brasher ; and granddaughter of John Pintard and Mary Cameron ; and great-granddaughter of John Pintard and Catherine Carre, refugees from Rochelle, France, 1633.

CAT'S NOTES :

The location for Captain Screven's final remains has as yet not been discovered. He died in New Orleans , on his way to join his regiment, the Eighth Infantry , in Texas. Perhaps he was buried in New Orleans, or was he shipped to a Fort in Texas for burial . And where was his family located , his wife and children. They were in New York according to the 1850 Census. Were they getting ready to join him in Texas?Perhaps he was sent to South Carolina to a family cemetery to join the members of his larger family, the Screven's or the Bedons. More research is needed.
