Wife of Richard Devlin of Youghal, County Cork, Ireland, Mary Hill mothered an only child, Bernard, future Bishop of the Diocese of Gibraltar. Moving to the Rock following her husband's passing in 1953 as to be near her only son, upon her death at the age of 77, she was buried in the local cemetery. As Bishop Devlin was very much devoted to his mother, it was his wish that upon his death he would be laid to rest in her same grave. However, as the people of Gibraltar held him is the highest of esteem, feeling reluctant to have their former bishop buried in the cemetery rather than in the cathedral as is customary for ordinaries, they had his mother's remains exhumed and placed in a box, had her re-interred upon his casket inside the Cathedral of St. Mary the Crowned, thus fulfilling still his wish of being buried along with her.
