Dies at Hospital
Mrs. Susan Newton Crossed the
Plains in Famous Henkle
Train of 200.

Mrs. Susan Newton, who crossed the plains by ox team In the Henkle train that migrated to Oregon In 1853. died at one o'clock Sunday at the Corvallis General Hospital, following an illness and operation for hernia and later illness from pneumonia. Mrs. Newton was the daughter of Rev. Jesse and Margaret Wood and was born In Lee County, Iowa September 11, 1840.
When 13 years of to age she came with her. parents to Oregon, traveling in the now famous Henkle train that numbered possibly 200 immigrants headed West to locate In the new land in Oregon country. Rev. and Mrs. Wood, the latter a Henkle by birth, and their children took up a homestead on a site west of Philomath and Mrs. Newton passed a number of years of her life In that community.
She was married to Gamaliel G. Newton October 26, 1862, and the couple located on the Newton farm of 375 acres four miles west of Corvallis, property owned jointly by Mr. Newton and his father. As the wife of a Benton County Commissioner and prominent farmer, Mrs. Newton passed a number of years on the farm near this city and saw Corvallis developed from a primitive village to its present prosperity.
Eight years ago Mr. and Mrs. Newton moved to Corvallis and 4 few months later Mr. Newton passed away. Mrs. Newton has since made her home with her daughter, Mrs. O. W. Cooper.
Of Mrs. Newton's family but two brothers, Charles and Abraham Wood Philomath, survive.
She was the mother of six children who survive her, four daughters and two sons. They are Mrs. S. J. McCoy of Oakesdale, Wash; Mrs. George W. Slayton of Prineville; Mrs. Robert C Herron of Monroe, Mrs. Q. V. Cooper, E.J. Newton and A.A. Newton of Corvallis. The funeral services will be held from the home of Mrs. G.W. Cooper, 810 South Eleventh Street, at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Rev. Herbert Livingsten of the Congregational Church will officiate and interment will be in Newton Cemetery, a section of the old Newton farm.
