James Coursen Hagerman was born the son of Abraham Coursen Hagerman b. 15 Oct 1810 in Warren County, New Jersey and Malinda Eyer b. 13 January 1827 in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. James had three brothers: Francis Coursen "Frank", William, and John Wesley; and three sisters: Alice Louise Coe (Clinton D.), Josephine Morgan (Charles E.) and Grace Borum (John J.). James was the third youngest of the seven children.

As a young man, James preferred to go by his middle name "Coursen". Coursen enjoyed hunting for wolfs with his friend Matthew Shore. The two of them would take the pelts and sell them.

Coursen had left the Woosung area and moved to Salt Lake City, Utah and worked alongside his brother John. John was an independent contractor/painter and Coursen was a hired as a painter.

Coursen later returned to his home town and became a town clerk of Woosung, he was also know for being an expert in working on windmills and pumps.

James Coursen Hagerman's death was a great loss to the area. Apparently, he had a cut on his little finger which seemed to have healed. Unfortunately, a few weeks late the pain became unbearable. The diagnosis of tetanus was too late for treatment.
