Lieutenant J Gunn S Munroe, Kitchener's Horse. He volunteered for service in Kitchener's Horse in South Africa during the Second Anglo Boer War. Kitchener's Horse was raised in the Cape Colony at the start of the Second Anglo Boer War and was employed in the operations undertaken by Lord Roberts in Feb 1900 for the relief of Kimberley and in his advance to Bloemfontein. One squadron of Kitchener's Horse was left on the lines of communication. One half of the regiment was with Colonel Hannay when Cronje was discovered on 15 Feb 1900 and they took part in the pursuit and the other operations which led to his capture. On 7 Mar 1900 they were engaged at Poplar-Grove. They fought at the battle of Karee Siding on 29 Mar 1900. Lieutenant Munroe was killed in action at Houtnek, April 30th, 1900. He was buried on the battlefield. His remains were reinterred at Thaba Nchu Cemetery on 31 Jan 1905.

Burial record indicates he had previous service in the Gordon Highlanders.
