Stephen W. O'Brien was born on February 21, 1889. Steve was a steam fitter for Weber Wagon Works prior to his conscription at the age of 29 into the US Army during World War I. He was inducted on June 20, 1918 and sent to Camp Shelby, near Hattiesburg, Mississippi for basic training. He then spent about a month at Camp Mills and Camp Upton on Long Island, NY prior to sailing for Europe on October 6 as a soldier in the American Expeditionary Force (AEF). A member of the 139th Field Artillery, Battalion D, his troop ship landed in France around October 20, 1918. After the War, Steve returned to Weber. In December of 1919, his name appeared in a program for a Weber "Minstrel and Dance", singing "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles". His granddaughter Pat and daughter Anne remember Steve singing around the house, usually an Irish song. Steve later worked at Parnell Wagons, at the Chicago Stockyards and as a mechanic for the Bowman Dairy Company (43rd and State). He married MARGARET V. MOORE, a telephone company supervisor (7/7/1887 – 9/26/1959) on June 14, 1922. At this time, Steve and Margaret lived at 5927 Green in Chicago. They had four children (William b.5/25/1924, Rosemary b.1/7/1926, Margaret b.12/27/1927, Anne b.7/19/1929). Margaret died on September 25, 1959. In 1966 Stephen married HELEN CARLSON of Dowagiac, MI, but got divorced two years later. Steve passed away in Calumet City, IL in November, 1972.
