Italy Roland was born in Booneville AR to David Luther Thurston and Frances Ann Drisskill. Her family moved from Arkansas to Texas. There, she married Thomas E. Roland in 1888 at Selfs, TX. For a time, she lived in Bienville, LA, near her husband's family. Then, they moved to Paris TX where she worked as a dressmaker. In the 1890s they moved to Brady, Indian Territory, then to Ardmore by 1895. She was a charter member of Carter Avenue Methodist Church, and lived in the same house at 617 Lake Murray Drive since 1898.

Italy and David had seven children. Three (Ivan, Victor, and Lela) did not live past the age of two. Eula, Carrie, Mike, and Sudie (pictured above right with Ann Italy) were their living children.
