Lucy Helen Butcher of Atlantic, Ia. passed away Tuesday, March 12, 2002 at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic. She had attained the age of 88 years, two months and 19 days.

Funeral ceremonies were held Friday, March 15 at 1:30 p.m. at the Knutson Funeral Home in Avoca, Ia. with Lay Assistant Wayne Paulsen officiating. Interment was in the Graceland Cemetery in Avoca beside her late husband Dewayne.

Lucy Helen Butcher was born on Dec. 24, 1913 near Griswold, Ia. She was the daughter of John Robert and Clara Nevada Chubick Pierson. She was one of six children in the family.

Lucy attended school in Griswold through the sixth grade at which time her family moved to a log house west of Avoca, Ia. She then attended school at the Franz School west and south of Avoca near Bull Snake Hill.

Lucy was united in marriage to Dewayne Butcher in Avoca on Sept. 2, 1933. They were the parents of nine children.

She spent her life being a homemaker and enjoyed making quilts and gardening. She also enjoyed her many grandchildren's activities. Her family was the highlight of her life.

On Oct. 8, 1999 Lucy took up residents at the Atlantic Nursing and Rehab Center in Atlantic. She enjoyed attending the various activities provided there, especially Bingo.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband in 1969; one son, Albert, in infancy; a grandson, Rickie Flug; a great-grandson Jason Frazier; her brothers, Lester and Cecil; her half-brothers John (Jack), Sidney and Robert Pierson and Alfred Mervin Chubick; and her half-sisters Jennie Stevens, Josephine Garrison and Beulah Nielsen.

She leaves to mourn her passing her children, Eva and husband Kenneth Frazier of Runnells, Ia., Edwin and wife Pat of Omaha, Ne., Helen and husband Joel Flug of Audubon, Ia., John and wife Barbara of Avoca, Larry and wife Penny of Mystic, Ia., Eugene and wife Cheryl of Avoca, Linda and husband Tom Martin of Harlan, Ia., and Dorothy Sievers of Avoca; two sisters, Elsie Lawson of Corning, Ia. and Leona and husband John Lint of Villisca, Ia.; two brothers, Richard Pierson and wife Charlotte of Red Oak, Ia. and Edgar Pierson of Humeston, Ia.; 23 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; besides nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
