The father, Francis Shutwell, a carpenter and joiner, purchased 40 acres of land situated about six miles west of where the city of Jacksonville now stands and actively worked at his trade. The family was counted in Morgan County in the 1850 census. Then in 1852 the family moved to Hancock County by team and wagons. The father purchased 276 acres in La Harpe Township and, choosing to become a farmer, became making the massive improvements that made his property a rich and valuable tract.
