Sarah Eunice Wotring Miller was born 3 Sep 1875 at Horseshoe Run in Preston County, WV. She was the daughter of Benjamin Eugene Wotring of Horseshoe Run, Preston County, WV and Margaret Elizabeth Crabill formerly of Maurertown, Shenandoah County, VA.

Sarah E. Wotring's Birth Record

Sarah Eunice Wotring's family (Benjamin E Wotring) were living on part of the original Abraham D. Wotring property at Horseshoe Run, WV. Her father had bought 174 acres from his father, Abraham D.Wotring and Margaret Clark Wotring (Abraham's 3rd wife) in April 1882. The Benjamin E. Wotring family lived there until the farm was sold on 5 October 1897 to Daniel C. Blamble.

The family moved in 1897 from Preston County, WV to Bayard, Union District, Grant County, WV.
The Wotring siblings ages at the time of the move were:
Stella Prudence Wotring Blamble 25 was married in 1890 so was no longer living at home
Sarah Eunice Wotring 22 years old
Clarence Orestes Wotring 19 years old
Martha Ruth Wotring 15 years old
Mary Louisa (Mayme) Wotring 12 years old
John Crabill Wotring 10 years old

In the 1900 Census, her father, Benjamin E. Wotring was listed as a boarder with the occupation as a Contractor in Sang Run, Garrett Co, MD home of James W. Friend. The rest of the family was listed in Union District,Grant Co, WV with Margaret listed as head, and since Benjamin is also listed in both locations he must have been commuting during this time.

But it was in Tucker Co that Sarah Eunice Wotring 29 years old married John William Miller 29 year old. The marriage license was issued June 20, 1905 just 3 months prior to Sarah Eunice Wotring's 30th birthday. I believe the marriage ceremony was held June 26, 1905 which would be a year after her father, Benjamin died.

Wotring/Miller Marriage License

Eunice and Will then came to Virginia to farm land that was once part of the estate of her maternal grandfather, Jonathan Stribling Crabill, near Maurertown, VA. On the homeplace was an original log cabin that was later called the "Summer Kitchen" and where Eunice's mother, Margaret Elizabeth Crabill Wotring lived until her death in 1929. Loyal remembered spending time with his grandmother and listening to her stories in this cabin which had a covered porch in front and a wood stove that heated the large one or two room cabin. Apparently, this cabin which faced east was where the newly weds must have lived until the larger 4 bedroom frame house was built at a right angle to the cabin and faced south and sit about 10-15 feet away.

Their marriage was blessed with 5 children with their only daughter dying at one year old. The family were members of St. Peters Lutheran Church in Toms Brook. Both Sarah Eunice and John William Miller are buried in the church cemetery (Toms Brook Cemetery)together with their daughter, her mother and more recently their grandson, Donald Miller, The cemetery is located on the other side of the railroad tracks on the hillside above St. Peters Lutheran Church in Toms Brook, VA.

When her son, Loyal was born, his birth certificate lists the residence of his mother as Hendricks, WV. Can't explain this except maybe Hendricks was where she and John William were married and this information was misinterpreted when it was added to Loyal's birth certificate.
