Predeceased by parents William and Mildred (Keefe) Sharkey, and his brothers William and John, Fr. Sharkey will be missed by his sisters-in-law, Bibianna Hartman (William) and Joan Sharkey (John); his nieces and nephews: Leo, Janet, Anne, Michael and Robert and great nieces and nephews, his surviving cousins: Madelene Fisher, Jean Dister and Mary Catherine Donahue and his second cousins, the members of the Dominican Order, the members of his Madonna House community, and the many people who have benefited from his spiritual direction and guidance both in Combermere and elsewhere.
Fr. Sharkey was born October 18, 1928 in Youngstown, Ohio. He served in the army, graduated from the University of Detroit and did graduate work at the University of North Carolina before entering the Dominican order at St. Stephen's Priory in Dover, Massachusetts. When he became a Dominican he took the name Urban. He then studied at the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, DC. Fr. Sharkey was ordained on June 13, 1963 at St. Dominic Church in Washington, D.C. by Most Rev. Vincent S. Watters, DD, Bishop of Raleigh, N.C. From 1964 to 1969, Fr. Sharkey held assignments at: Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, MI; the Dominican Studium in River Forest, IL; Barry College in Miami. FL; and St. Vincent Ferrer in New York, NY. In the fall of 1969, he moved to Combermere, ON, and took his first promises as a staff worker of the Madonna House Apostolate on March 25, 1971. In 1972, Fr. Sharkey moved into a log cabin poustinia (Russian word for desert) in Combermere, and spent the rest of his life living in solitude and serving the Madonna House community and others by his prayers, homilies, retreats, teaching of Catholic doctrine, and especially his spiritual direction for hundreds of directees. His wake will be held at St. Mary's chapel, Madonna House, Combermere, on Wednesday February 25, with visiting from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. and a wake service at 8 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary's chapel, at 11 a.m. on Thursday February 26, 2009. Fr. Sharkey will be buried in the Dominican Cemetery at Pleasantville, New York.
