Mary Dillard Adkins was born November 13, 1914, at Minneapolis, Minnesota. She is the daughter of Lincoln K. Adkins born in Lake City, Tennessee, and Anne Dillard (Cody) Adkins born in Waynesville, N. C.
In 1932 Mary graduated from La Crosse Central High School, where she was President of Nocturne, a music group. As hobbies, she also participated in all sports and sang in the church choir. In 1936 Mary completed her work at La Crosse State College with a major in English and social studies. During that period she was very active in the Women's Athletic Association and was a member and officer of Sigma Lamda Sigma, a literary sorority.
During 1937-38 she earned 30 graduate credits in English literature at the University of Chicago. Ten years later in 1947-48 she received an M.S. degree in psychology and counseling at the University of Kansas.
From 1938-39 Mary was a teacher-librarian at the Senior High School in Viola, Wisconsin. She also directed the Senior Class Play.
In 1937 she set up, organized, and trained a staff for the church library at the Pilgrim Congregational Church, Milwaukee.
In 1960-61 she was part-time instructor of applied psychology in the Milwaukee Institute of Technology, Junior College Division.
In 1964-65 she did some volunteer counseling and some teaching in the Cordoza Area Grade School of Washington, D.C.
From 1956-58 Mary held the offices of President, Vice-President and Secretary of the P.T.A. of the Pleasant View Elementary School, Milwaukee. During the years 1968-70 she was a member of the West Grove Garden Club and a Board member of the West Grove Civic Association.
