George Ledyard Freeman, the son of Kenneth Gifford & Marion (Taylor) Freeman, was born October 9, 1925 in Independence, Buchanan County, Iowa. He graduated from Withrop High School and attended Iowa State University. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. George was united in marriage with Lucille Ann (Kasowsky)on May 28, 1949 in Ottumwa, Iowa. George farmed for many years and worked for Thermogas in Sumner as well as other agraiculture chemical companies, Brayton Chemicals and United Agriculture Products.
George's death occurred Saturday, June 30, 2001 at Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo, Black Hawk County, Iowa after an extended illness. He was 75 years old. George was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic in Sumner and was active in the Knights of Columbus. He was a longtime American Legion Thomas E Woods Post #223 member and past Commander, he belonged to the 40 and 8 Organization, and he was a former Cubmaster. George enjoyed square dancing with the Swinging Squares until emphysema restricted him. He also enjoyed birdwatching, gardening, grilling outdoors, playing cards, and spending time with family and friends.
George is survivied by his wife, Lucille Freeman of Sumner; three sons, Steve Freeman and his friend, Deb Hoelter of Reno, Nevada; Marv (Lynn) Freeman of Round Rock, Texas; Alan Freeman of Littleton, Colorado; two daughters, Carol (Mark) Sanderson of Marion, Iowa; Diane (Joseph) Zabel of Carter Lake, Iowa; nine grandchildren; two great children; two brothers, Richard (Ellen) Freeman of Fairfax, Iowa; Earl (Twyla) Freeman of Dumont, Iowa; and one sister, Kathryn (Lester C.) Fawcett of Winthrop, Iowa.

George was preceded in death by his parents; one stillborn grandchild; and one daughter-in-law, Kathie Freeman.
