After the film Heavenly Creatures (directed by Peter Jackson) was released in 1994 about the Parker-Hulme murder case of 1954 in New Zealand, it was revealed that Perry was actually Juliet Marion Hulme, one of the two girls involved in the murder of her friend Pauline Parker's mother in Christchurch, New Zealand. The two girls were convicted of murder but released from prison after five years. In Heavenly Creatures, Hulme was portrayed by Kate Winslet.
After her release from prison Hulme moved to England and became a flight attendant. After that she moved to the United States and joined the LDS Church, but later moved to Scotland and lived in the village of Portmahomack, where she stayed with her mother. When she began writing she took the name Anne Perry, using her stepfather's surname.
She was initially concerned after being outed as Juliet Hulme in 1994 but came to terms with the situation (she had not been consulted during the making of the film and was only approached by journalists after it had been released).
Perry left Scotland in 2017 and came to the United States to promote films based on her novels. She died at a hospital in Los Angeles.
