Delo Bliss of the well known firm of Dodge & Bliss, died Wednesday last, after a three months' illness, at his home in Highwood, aged seventy-eight years. Mr. Bliss was born at Truxton, Cortland County, N. Y., on January 26, 1841, and later removed with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Bliss, to Steuben County, where he was educated. He went to New York City in 1857 and after serving as clerk and traveling agent for a jewelry house, he entered the employ of McGraw & Company, a prosperous lumber concern in Jersey City. In 1861 he began manufacturing wood boxes for the government and in 1864 he was joined in business by William E. Dodge under the title Dodge & Company. In 1878 Mr. Bliss became associated in the organization of the present Dodge & Bliss Company and was made vice -president and manager. Mr. Bliss was the originator of the effective device for nailing and printing of boxes by machinery and he perfected a number of other mechanical inventions which have been of great value in his line of industry. In 1864 he married Miss Emily Fielder, ex-Governor Fielder's aunt, who died in 1910. He was president of Meridith Shook Lumber Company at Meredith, N.H., and vice-president of the Palisades Trust and Guaranty Company, a charter member of the Englewood Club, and was for many years a vestryman of St. Paul's Church of Englewood. During his long residence here Mr. Bliss' life was closely interwoven with all of the affairs of our city. He was generally popular and was held in esteem by every one. Mr. Bliss was married for a second time in 1917 to Miss Mary Corliss, of New York, who survives him. He also leaves four daughters, Mrs. Edward Roberts; Mrs. E.B. Caulkins of Detroit; Mrs. Dan Fellows Platt and Mrs. Alexander Amend. Private services were held at the home yesterday, Rev. Elwin Spear Officiating in the absence of Dr. Fleming James.
