Pioneer Resident of Columbia Dies

Joseph Souza, 80, died at a local hospital early Monday morning where he had been undergoing treatment for a few weeks. He was a pioneer resident of the Columbia section, residing near the marble quarry for nearly fifty years. He was a native of the Azores Islands and came to California 52 years ago.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Mary Souza; a daughter, Mrs. Jobe Alexander (Mary) of Carson Hill; a brother, Frank, and a sister, Annie, of Oakland.

The funeral was held from the Burden Chapel Thursday morning, followed by Mass at St. Ann's church, Columbia.

Joseph Souza and Mary Azevedo were married in May 1894. He was 41 and she was 22 years old. Their daughter, Mary, was the only child born to this couple. The family owned a farm near the marble quarry near Columbia.
