A. D. Clem, Former Iowa State Senator, Dies Here

A. D. Clem, 65, 3600 Vine avenue, longtime Sioux City attorney and former state senator from Woodbury county, died at his residence Tuesday afternoon.

Senior member of the law firm which also includes his son, Robert C. Clem, Mr. Clem had long been active in local and state affairs. He served in the 50th, 50th special, 51st and 52d sessions of the general assembly of the state legislature, from 1943 to 1947.

He was born August 2, 1897, at Marshalltown, Ia., where he attended grade and high school. He attended Coe college and was graduated from the State University of Iowa law school. He married Wilma M. Heath at Montezuma, Ia., in 1921 and they came to Sioux City immediately afterwards.

Mr. Clem opened his law practice here at that time.

In addition to having served in the state senate, he was an assistant Woodbury county attorney from 1927 to 1931. He also was past president of the Sgt. Floyd council, Boy Scouts of America; member of the Iowa state development commission; member of the Iowa State Safety council; member of Grace Methodist church and past president of its board of trustees; served as a delegate to the general and jurisdictional conferences of the Methodist church; was past president of the High Twelve club here; was a member of the Lions club, and was past president of Sioux City chapter, National Conference of Christians and Jews.

Mr. Clem also was a member of the Iowa and American Bar associations; Morningside lodge 615, A. F. & A. M.; Columbian commandery 18; Knights Templar, Sioux City Consistory 5; Abu Bekr Shrine temple, and Morningside chapter, Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include the widow; a daughter, Mrs.
Dorothy Otten of Dubukue; the son, Robert C.; two sisters, Mrs. Merl Perisho of Waterloo and Mrs. Walter Tomlinson of Traer, Ia., and a grandchild.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Grace Methodist Church. Rev. M. B. Green, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Graceland park cemetery.

The body will be at the W. Harry Christy funeral home in Morningside until time for the funeral.
