She graduated from East Carolina Teachers College and taught school for one year before she married Willard Corbett Pleasant. She and Willard had four daughters: JoAnn, Judy, Kathryn, and Dell. Their daughters attended Sherwood-Bates Elementary, Daniels Junior High, and Broughton High schools.
The Pleasants were charter members of Saint Paul's Christian Church. In 1963, as Hazel was making biscuits in the church's booth at the NC State Fair, she got a call from her husband asking her to come home and get dressed to go to an auction. At the auction, Hazel bid on and bought a 200-acre farm just south of Apex. Through the years, while raising their children and operating an insurance agency, the Pleasants grew tobacco on the farm, sold parcels of it, and raised timber on it. Recently the remaining 92 acres were purchased by the town of Apex to create a park. At the request of the daughters, the town agreed to honor Hazel and Willard Pleasant by naming the park "Pleasant Park."
Mrs. Pleasant passed away on April 18 in Hartsville, SC at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn and Charles M. Luther. She was surrounded by her loving family. She is survived by her daughters, JoAnn Sieburg-Baker of Charlotte, NC, Judy Ives of Apex, NC, Kathi Luther of Hartsville, SC, and Dell Edwards of Rougemont, NC, eight grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Christian Church at 2:00 on Friday.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that gifts be made to St. Paul's Christian Church, 3331 Blue Ridge Rd, Raleigh, NC 27612.
