Inventor. He is credited with developing the popular number game, Sudoku. Garns was an Indianapolis, Indiana architect who worked on his idea for a numbers puzzle in the 1960s and 1970s, keeping it largely to himself. His puzzle, originally named Number Place, was first published in 1979, but without his byline. By the mid-1980s the Number Place puzzle had become popular in Japan and was renamed Su Doku. The Times of London newspaper printed the game in 2004 and Sudoku soon became internationally famous. Garns died of cancer, never knowing his game had become a worldwide success.
