Luther Edward Ball, Jr, died while serving his country in Vietnam. He served in Co C, 1st BN, 8th Calvary Division, 1st Cav US Army. Luther was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
Luther grew up in the Highland Hills area of Cleveland, Ohio. His parents Luther and Clara,requested his burial in Clay County, Florida.

Prior to his enlistment in the service, Luther spent a brief time at the Cuyahoga Boys School, in Highland Hills.

After Luther's death, that same year on September 26, 1969, the facility renamed the school in honor of Luther. Daniel Hanstein, the current Principal shared a newspaper article and other information regarding the dedication, and current goals of the school. Their vision for the future is "finding new ways to inspire and educate our youth, to further their knowledge, and to prepare them for their own future. With that far reaching sight come innovations, technology and creativity."
