Born Johannes M. Van der Jagt, the son of Cornelius Manus Van der Jagt and Maatje Bienerveldt-Van der Jagt, on 05 Jun 1837 in Burgh, Schouwen-Duiveland, Zeeland, Netherlands. He spent the first 11 years of his life in the Motherland, until his father moved his siblings, mother, and paternal grandfather, Cornelius Van der Jagt, to the United States of America. They departed from Rotterdam, Netherlands aboard the immigrant ship, Rose Standish, arriving in New York, New York, USA on 13 Sep 1849.
Eventually, the family settled in Cedar Grove, Sheboygan, Wisconsin and took up farming.
On 04 Mar 1862, "John" married Jozina Josephine "Josie" DeMaster in Sheboygan county, Wisconsin and they took up residence in the Holland Township, Sheboygan, Wisconsin area and continued farming.
They had 9 known children before his wife, "Josie" died tragically from complications of accidentally falling into a vat of lye while expecting their 10th child. 4 sons... Cornelius VanderJagt (1865-1937), Pieter "Peter" VanderJagt (1871-1937), Johannes "John" VanderJagt (1884-1950), and a stillborn son (09 Jan 1887); 5 daughters... Janna "Jennie" VanderJagt-Sheehan (1867-1939), Maatje "Martha" VanderJagt-Koning (1870-1915), Whilhelmina "Mina or Minnie" VanderJagt-Knapper (1874-1954), Saartje "Sarah" VanderJagt-TeGrotenhuis (1876-1948), and Jozina "Josephine" VanderJagt-Theune.
