As a young man, Gene served with the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) building park roads in Arizona until 1937 and served in the US Army at the end of WWII. He was stationed in Japan at the end of the war driving bulldozers to build roads and airstrips.
Gene was the band truck driver, and he and Oleta were Band Parents for the Abilene High School Marching Band during the 1970s. He was a Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America and was given the rank of Scoutmaster Emeritus when he retired from scouting. He retired from the Texas Highway Department in 1986, where he worked as a diesel mechanic for about 30 years.
