Dozier C. Black is the son of Allen and Nancy Black. D. C. Black, age 20, enlisted in Capt. John D. Pope's Company, Howard's Battalion, Confederate Cavalry, on May 16, 1862, at Camp Smith, Cleveland, Tennessee, for 3 years. This company subsequently became Company E, 3rd Regiment, Confederate Cavalry.
He was captured June 25, 1863, at Beech Grove or Hillsboro, Coffee County, Tennessee. Pvt. D. C. Black was received at Military Prison, Louisville, Kentucky, from Nashville, Tennessee, on July 7, 1863, and was sent the same day to Camp Chase, Ohio. On July 14 Pvt. D. C. Black was transferred to Fort Delaware, Delaware, where he died of smallpox as a Prisoner of War on December 1, 1863. He was buried on Jersey Shore opposite the post.
