The grandson of Jonathan Herring (1777-before 1860), Newton J. Herring was born in Madison County, Georgia in 1840, the son of Alpheus (1811-1890) and Mariah Landers Payton Herring (1800-1880).

He married Mary Elizabeth Bray on Dec 6, 1858 in Madison County. They had a son, Newton F. (b.1860).

On July 11, 1861, Newton enlisted, as a Private, in Company A, 16th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Army of Northern Virginia, CSA (Known as the "Madison County Greys"), and was subsequently appointed Sergeant. He was captured at the Battle of Gettysburg, PA on July 5, 1863. On November 17, 1863 he died of small pox in Fort Delaware, the U.S. Military Prison located on Pea Patch Island in the Delaware River, New Castle County, Delaware (40 miles south of Philadelphia).

His three brothers, half-brother James W. Payton, and a cousin, Elisha Herring, also enlisted in the "Madison County Greys":

Benjamin F. Herring (b.1842): (July 11, 1861) Private. Killed at Crampton's Gap, Battle of South Mountain, Frederick County, MD on September 14, 1862.

Elijah J. Herring (b.1834): (July 11, 1861) Private. Killed at Knoxville, TN on November 29, 1863.

Henry L. Herring (1836-1912): (July 18, 1862) Private. He was wounded in the left arm, and permanently disabled at the Battle of Chancellorsville, VA on May 3, 1863. Pension records show he was on wounded furlough when the war ended.

Elisha Herring (1840-1916): (July 11, 1861) Private. Transferred to Company C, 3d BN, Georgia Sharpshooters on June 8, 1863. Captured at the Battle of Sayler's Creek on April 6, 1865. Released at Point Lookout, MD. June 28,1865.

Additionally, Newton's father, Alpheus Herring, enlisted in Echol's Light Artillery, CSA, on Oct 29, 1862.

Newton was the brother of my great great grandfather, Henry L. Herring.
