HARTFORD, Donald LeRoy, 85, of Henrico, passed away April 12, 2017, at The Hermitage at Cedarfield. He was preceded in death by his sons, Stewart and Christian Hartford. He is survived by his wife, Mary T. Hartford; his sons, Paul Hartford of Chattanooga, Tenn., James Hartford of Auburn, Ala., and Timothy Hartford currently posted in Bucharest, Romania; his daughters, Anna "Lacy" Bauer of Sacramento, Calif., and Christy Edwards of Germantown, Tenn.; his sister, Shirley Jones, of DeLand, Fla.; his stepmother, Elma Hartford of Middletown, Ohio; and nine grandchildren. He also leaves stepchildren, Thomas Wood, Henry Wood, Carolyn Gummerson, and Sarah Scott; seven stepgrandchildren, as well as many close friends. Dr. Hartford was born in Covington, Ky., and went on to earn bachelor's, master's, and doctorate degrees at the University of Kentucky. In between earning degrees, he served in the U.S. Army band training unit at Fort Dix, N.J. during the Korean War. Having learned computer training on the earliest machines, he taught for IBM in Cincinnati, Ohio, conducted research and taught at Florida State and Auburn Universities, and helped to install major computer systems at Pepperdine University in California and Wayne County Community College in Michigan. He came to Richmond in 1980 as Director of Academic Computing for Virginia Commonwealth University and ended his academic career teaching for Henrico County Public Schools. After retiring, Dr. Hartford started a business performing museum-quality repair of damaged porcelain and fine china. During his time in Richmond, Dr. Hartford played trumpet, coronet and flugelhorn with the Richmond Pops Band, the Richmond Swing Orchestra, and the Henrico Community Band. An avid student of history and the Bible, Dr. Hartford taught Bible study classes for many years at Westminster Canterbury and The Hermitage at Cedarfield, the latter of which was his residence for the last 16 years of his life. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 22, 2017, at The Hermitage at Cedarfield. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Cedarfield Angel Fund, 2300 Cedarfield Parkway, Richmond, Va. 23233.
