LCpl Markel was one of 19 men killed in action when they were engaged by an enemy force while on a sweep through an open rice paddy. Jim served with Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Regiment Marine, 1st Marine Division.

Jim is the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. James C. Markel Sr. and is married to the former Judy Reedy. He attended East Fallowfield Elementary School, South Brandywine Middle School, and Scott High School (now Coatesville Area High School), Pennsylvania.
