Robert arrived in Vietnam 8 March 1965 with 1st Platoon, India Company, 3rd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division.
He was killed by friendly fire, at Hill 271, 4 kilometers southwest of Da Nang.
Robert was the first combat Marine that was killed in Vietnam. He had landed at Da Nang Bay, South Vietnam, with the first Marine troops sent to combat duty on March 5, 1965.
Robert graduated in 1962 from Griffin High School, Springfield, Illinois.
