Obituary.
The obituary of L.V. WHITCRAFT was mislaid after the funeral and was handed us the first of this week. Although it is a little late, we publish it for the benefit of the family and friends of the late Mr. Whitcraft.
Lawrence Van Whitcraft was born Sept. 28, 1839 and died Dec. 10, 1908. His life began in Harrison county, Ohio, and ended at Holton, Kansas. He came to Kansas in 1868 and has spent most of his life in Holton. He was married to Louie J. BURNETT, Nov. 15, 1870, and they lived happily together for eleven years, when she was called from labor to reward. He was married to Matilda SCHRAMM, July 30, 1884, and was again bereaved by her death on July 4, 1898. He united in marriage with Mary M. CRAYBILL in June 1899. Six children were born to these unions, four of whom survive him: G. T. Whitcraft, of Axtell, Kansas; Mrs. M.B. SMYTHE, of Holton; W.E. Whitcraft of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Lawrence C., of Holton. He leaves one sister, Mrs. Martha Hood, of Holton, with whome he made his home during his last illness. He was a soldier in the Civil War and served in Co. B., 31st Ohio., Volunteer Infantry, answering his country's first call for volunteers, and served faithfully until the close of the war, receiving his honorable discharge on June 10, 1865. He served eight months in Andersonville prison, being taken prisoner near Millageville, Ga., in December 1864. He was a man of quiet and reserved manners, but very loyal to his friends and relatives. His funeral was conducted by Rev. M. G. Hamm at the home of Mrs. Hood. He was laid to rest in the Holton cemtery, loved and honored by many friends and acquaintances. May he rest in peace.
