Sergeant in 1830th Ordnance Supply and Maintenance Company of the Third Army Dunham enlisted as a private in the U.S. Army on January 18, 1942, at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and served in the European Theatre of World War II with the 1830th Ordnance Supply and Maintenance Company, Aviation. During D-Day, this unit helped to support the 9th Air Force. Stanley and his brother Ralph were deployed to France six weeks after D-Day. Before the Invasion of Normandy, the Dunhams once met accidentally as Stanley went in search of rations at Hotel Russell in London, where his sibling Ralph happened to be staying.

Stanley was the son of Ralph Waldo Emerson Dunham b. 1894 in Argonia, KS, and Ruth Lucille Armour b. 1900 in IL. He had one brother Ralph Emerson Dunham b. 1916 in Wichita, Sedgwick Co., KS.

After his mother's death, his father married Marthamae Stonehouse; they had two girls: Virginia "Ginny" Dunham who married Cecil Goeldner, and Eleanor Belle Dunham who married Ralph Berkebile.

He married on 5 May 1940 in Wichita, Sedgwick Co., KS, Madelyn Lee Payne; they had one daughter, Stanley "Ann" Dunham b. 27 Nov 1942 who married (1) Barack H. Obama Sr. in 1960 in HI, divorced 1963. Ann & Barack had one son Barack Hussein Obama Jr., US Sen from IL and President of the US, who married Michelle L. Robinson and who has two girls: Sasha and Malia Obama.

Ann married and later divorced (2) Lolo Soetoro; they had one daughter: Maya Soetoro who married Konrad Ng. Maya and Konrad have two daughters: Suhaila and Savita Ng.
