John Patrick (JP) Cooney II died on April 27, 2015 at the age of 71 at St. Vincent Healthcare, after an extended illness.
He was born to John "Jack" Newton and Jane Buchanan Cooney on November 29, 1943 in Helena, MT. After his mother passed away from polio when JP was 3 years old, his father married Gladys L. Larson. Gladys, adopted and loved John dearly as her own, but always made sure he remembered who Jane was.
He spent his entire life operating the family ranch southeast of Harlowton that was established by his dad Jack. He loved ranching and never considered another life occupation. He graduated from Harlowton High School in 1962 and went on to graduate from MSU in Bozeman with a bachelors degree in Animal Science in 1966. He enlisted in the Army ROTC his junior year of college, and served in South Korea for 13 months from October 1966- November 1967. During this time he was under the 2nd BN of the 76th ARTY. He returned home in November 1967 to care for his father who was dying of cancer and manage the ranching operation. He received an honorable discharge from the Army on June 30, 1972.
He and Lauriann White were married in August 1969. They had two children. They later divorced.
He married Jan Austin in October 1980. To this union, he adopted Jan's daughter. They had two children. They later divorced.
He is survived by five children, nine grandchildren, an uncle and aunt, and numerous cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents Jack, Jane, and Gladys Cooney, as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
