Walter Percival, decorated WW II POW, dies

MATAMORAS – Walter Percival, 77, of Rose Lane, a recipient of a special Congressional medal for prisoners of war during World War II, died Thursday, Feb. 20, 1992, at Mercy Community Hospital, Port Jervis, N. Y.

Mr. Percival was a retired crane operator for the Erie Railroad in Port Jervis and a lifelong area resident. He was a member of the Hope Evangelical Free Church, Matamoras; of the Matamoras Rod and Gun Club; a U.S. Army-Air Force veteran of World War II; a member of Roosa-Fleming Post No. 161, Port Jervis and a member of the Ex-prisoner of War Association.

Mr. Percival was a crewman on a 15th Air Force B-24 bomber in Italy during World War II. In May 1944, on his second mission, his plane was shot down over Romania and he was captured, spending 396 days in four different stalags before being liberated by British forces in May 1945. He received a Congressional Medal on Nov. 11, 1988.

Mr. Percival was born in Matamoras Aug. 24, 1914, a son of William and Ida Crawford Percival. He married the late Willianna M. Parks who died Aug. 10, 1989.

He is survived by one son, Frank Miller of Port Jervis; one daughter, Betty Ann Ramey of Shelburne, Vt.; six grandchildren, one great grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held Sunday, Feb. 23, 1992, at 2 p.m. at Hope Evangelical Free Church, Matamoras. The Rev. Robert E. Foster will officiate.

Friends may call at the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, 154 E. Main St., Port Jervis, on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Roosa-Fleming Post 161, VFW, will conduct services on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Matamoras.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hope Evangelical Free Church, Matamoras, 18336.
