June 6, 1924 - March 14, 2023
On Tuesday March 14th, 2023, our sweet mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother passed away peacefully in St George, Utah at the age of 98. She was born June 6th, 1924, to Irene Winward and William Vernon Elmer in Portland, Oregon, the second youngest of seven children. Two sisters, four brothers, Lyone, Arlon Clark, Duane, Thelma, and Donna, all of whom preceded her in death.
Born just after World War I ended, she grew up in Portland area, surrounded by close family, the flowers, trees and greenery she enjoyed so much.
She lived her whole life serving and helping others and most of all living to spend time with family and friends, creating and sharing memories. She was very musical and an accomplished pianist, organist and soloist. She was widely known for her beautiful singing voice and often sang in wards, and was hired by the Presbyterian Church to sing for services. She played the organ when the Portland, Oregon Temple opened and served as a Temple Worker for the next 28 years until she moved to St George at the age of 91.. An active member of the Church, Norma served in numerous capacities including Relief Society President, Gospel Doctrine Teacher and Primary Teacher.
She married Donald Rust of Mountain Home, Utah in the Cardston, Alberta, Canada Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on June 24, 1943. She and Don completed a service mission in the United Kingdom when she was 75. They were blessed with four children, Dan (Brenda) Rust, Linda Kindred (Jim), Sharon Littlefield (Jay), and Janice Shafer (Greg). She is survived by her four children, 19 grandchildren, 41 great great grandchildren and 2 ½ great, great great grandchildren.
Her husband of 53 years, Don died of Cancer March 12, 1996.
She met and married Raymond Owen Hamm of Portland, Oregon when she was 77. They served together in the Portland, temple and served a Temple Mission in Nauvoo, Illinois. They lived in Portland until they moved to St George for health reasons. They so enjoyed living in the Beehive Cottages for eight years where they enjoyed meeting many new friends. Ray passed on July 12, 2019 at the age of 91.
Our family would like to express sincere thanks for the support and sympathy they received from the Seasons Health and Rehab, Dixie Hospice, Mari Sanders and all the workers and dear friends at the Beehive Cottages.
Services will be held Saturday March 18th, at 11:30 am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1068 Chandler Drive, St. George, Utah 84770.
