Bob and Jeanne were married for 62 years.

He is survived by his three children: son, Bishop Robert J. Carlson of Saginaw, Michigan; daughters, Cathy and Patty; eight grandchildren, Matt and wife Robin, Meghan, Kim and husband George, Mollie and husband Roger, Libby and Nick; three great-grandchildren, Thomas, Katie, Emily, and Baby McFeely; and his siblings, John, Marcia, Merrylyn and Curtis.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Jeanne, who entered eternal life in November 2004; his two infant daughters; and his parents, John and Ruth.

Obituary published in the Star Tribune from 3/7/2008 - 3/9/2008.

Other notes from Bishop Carlson published in the Saginaw News:

Bishop Robert J. Carlson relishes spending time with his family. So his trip this week to his father's home in Edina, Minn., was bittersweet.

"It's interesting; when I arrived I overheard two women saying, 'We lost a good one,' because Dad had a way of using humor when he talked to people," said Carlson, 66, Friday. "That's the type of person he was. Dad also was a person who could fix anything and a man of integrity.

"The good thing was Dad got his wish. He wanted to die at home, and hospice allowed him to do that. I think the last three years of his life were the hardest, because he missed Mom," the bishop said.

Bishop Carlson loved, honored and respected his father, and the family patriarch made it clear during Carlson's February 2005 installation he felt the same way about his son.

"I had to come," said the then-82-year-old father of Saginaw's fifth Roman Catholic bishop. "I was on a naval destroyer in Guam when my wife gave birth to Bob. He was 14 months old when I met him. His mom said, 'Son, this is your father.'

"He took one look at me and said, 'No, this is my dad,' picking up a photo of me. I'll never forget it."
