John was born in Rose Creek, Minnesota,to Christian and Mary (Wendell) Weiss grew up there attending Austin Catholic Schools St. Augustine (Pacelli) High School, St. Mary's College-Winona. He was a Golden Gloves boxer and joined the military to serve in World War II which he did as a pilot-Bombardier.
On June 27, 1939 he married Grace H. (Ellis) at Queen of Angels Austin Minnesota, where he became the Post Master and tended and co-owned his own establishment. He was the father to James, Thomas, Joseph and David, as well as friend and confidant to so many others.
John was very active in Springfield at several levels, Hospital Fund Raising the City Council, Chamber of Commerce. He served for many years on the Park Board, Airport Board, Springfield Public Safety, Springfield Civil Defense, and the Springfield City Council. He helped others in starting their business, he volunteered for the American Red Cross, Director of Public Safety Commission, Ambulance Commissioner, Flood Control Commissioner and other civic organizations. One his hobbies in his free time was that he cared for the Highway Parks on the East and West Side of Springfield through donations and maintenance much that was provided by himself!
John was also very active in St. Raphael's Parish as a Member of the first Advisory Board, and in 1971 he was appointed to the Pastorial Council. John was also a member of the Knights of Columbus serving as Grand Knight. He also 3rd Order of Franciscans member, Director of the lectors at St. Raphael's Catholic Church for many years as well as a Eucharistic Minister from the origin of this ministry to the time of his death, He ministered to the Sick, and serving on other Church and School Boards, just to name a few.
One of his favorite charitable organizations that he supported for years was the city of Boy's Town in Omaha. He also received the highest honors from the Diocese of New Ulm from Bishop's Schladweiler and Lucker and he served on the Diocese Board.

John is survived by James Anthony & Patty (Potter) of Virginia, Thomas John & Mary (Langer) of RiverFalls Wis and David Weiss of Saint Paul MN.Several Grand Children, and even Great Grand Children on the way. John also is survived by Sister Frances of Lorida Florida, Brother and Sister-In-Laws Dorthy Drechsel, Arrthur Ellis, Robert & Ruth Ellis, Marjorie Cullen, CLara & Pat Curtin, Virginia Ellis Dunfee, Clyd Ellis and others. Preceding John in death included Wife Grace Hattie (Ellis) Weiss 1987 Son, Joseph Weiss 1954 Brothers, Henry, Frank, George, Nicholas, Joseph, Sisters Mary Barbara (Weiss) Smith, Effie C. Weiss, Anna Olive (Weiss) Tindal, Regina Catherine (Weiss) Locher, Rosella Weiss.
