June 26, 1936 - May 3, 2023
Julia Elizabeth Batts Edens, 86, of Hampstead, NC, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2023, while surrounded by her loved ones whom she had served and nurtured for years. Elizabeth was born the youngest of ten to W.T. & Mollie Batts in Pender County, NC. She married Jerry "Shag" Edens (deceased 1988) in 1956 and is survived by their four children: Jerry Edens Jr. (Nancy), Janice Suggs (Jimmie Jr.), Gregory Edens (Terri), and Lisa Grant (Steve). She is also survived by her nine grandchildren (four "better halves"), nine great-grandchildren (one "better half"), and a great-great-grandchild. Family was everything to Elizabeth; that started with her siblings. She is also survived by two significant women—her sister-in-law Barbara Batts and her lifelong best friend Vertie Baldwin—as well as many nieces and nephews that she viewed as her own. Elizabeth was our beloved daughter, sister, wife, mom, Big Rama, Ma, aunt, and friend.
As the family matriarch, Elizabeth led by example forming a community around her kitchen table, embracing any and all who found themselves in need of a meal, a shoulder, an ear, or home. She found joy in every pecan pie she lovingly made for others, every fish fry she brought her "famous" tartar sauce to, and every banana pudding that graced the fish house steps. Elizabeth spent years in service of her church and community. She was a Sunday School teacher, VBS volunteer, and political poll volunteer. In 86 abundant years, she corrected some, fed many, liked most, and loved all.
Elizabeth Edens will be laid to rest on May 7, 2023. Visitation will begin promptly at 2:00 pm at Scotts Hill Baptist Church with service to follow at 3:00 pm. Interment will follow the service at Wesleyan Chapel United Methodist Church.
"Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her." (Proverbs 31:28).
