After the Civil War started, John, who was a farmer, joined the 80th Enrolled Missouri Militia, under Captain William Jackson. Soon the 80th E.M.M. just "disbanded" and in Nov. 1864, John joined the regular Army as a Private, in Co. B, 47th Missouri, Volunteer Infantry. He was 5' 8" tall, 140 pounds, blue-gray eyes, fair complexion and dark hair. In March, 1865, John was at Pulaski, Tennessee when he was shot in the back by "friendly" fire, while on picket duty. He was honorably discharged, at Benton Barracks, St. Louis, Missouri, in April 1865. After his discharge, when he was able to work, which was not often, due to his disabilities, he was a carpenter and/or a miner. John's old Military wound would heal over, then at times would open and ooze. He suffered from disease of the heart, piles, (hemorrhoids,) impaired vision, a bad right knee and chronic sore ribs, on his left side.
Prior to March 8, 1895, John was receiving a pension of $12 / mo., then it was reduced to $8 / mo, due to failure to file proper medical papers. On Aug. 8, 1907, it went back up to $12 / mo and in March 1912, it was increased to $15 / mo.

John H. Butler m: Lucinda E. Jackson, on Aug 25, 1864, in (probably DeSoto,) Jefferson County, MO. Lucinda was d/o Benjamin Jackson, b: 1790-1800 in NC. Cemetery records indicate John Butler's wife died 8 Sep 1894 and is buried in Rhea Cemetery, Rolla, Phelps County, MO. John's second marriage was in Dec. 1894, so I feel this is Lucinda that is buried there.

John H. Butler also married Lucretia Wallace on 30 Dec 1894
John H. Butler age 67 married Virginia A. Huffman age 52 on 4 May 1909 (Huffman, Virginia Adeline w/o Thomas J. 1855 Lake Spring Cemetery)
John H, Butler age 68 married M.E. Moore age 44 on 14 May 1910
