Bill worked on the railway mail out of Chicago before securing a rural route in Aledo in 1955. He also worked part time for Reiser Funeral Home. He retired in 1981 and they moved to Mesa, Arizona where they joined the community at Leisure World.
Bill enjoyed sports, especially football and baseball. He followed local school sports. He enjoyed playing cards and visiting friends and relatives. During a visit to White Hall in 2000, he suffered a severe stroke. After two weeks, Louise had him flown along with her and son Don, on an air ambulance back to Mesa, Arizona. He died October 23, 2004 a week after suffering another stroke.
He was survived by his wife, three children, Nancy Shepherd, Bill, and Don, two grandsons, Andrew and Russell Shepherd, a brother, Al of McLean, Illinois, and two sisters, Verda Williams of White Hall, and Alice Dean Rowan of Austin, Texas.
