Served as a corporal AAF in the 59th Weather Wing at air bases in England during WWII and later with the Army of Occupation in Germany. He earned an American Campaign Medal, EAME Campaign Medal, and a World War II Victory Medal.

After the war he earned his undergraduate degree at Princeton in 1947, then his PhD at the University of Michigan. He taught at Michigan for 3 years, than at Harvard for 6 years before being named head of the psychology department at the University of Cincinnati in 1961.

Survived by three children.

He married Beverly Balch in NJ in 1947. The later divorced. He married Anne Wohl in 1975, she preceded him in death in 2002.
