Edgar Dewell Kelley was one of 12 children born to Luther Delbert and Allie Mae Elms Kelley. He attended school at Cabiness and White Chimney and married Ida Jane Null on Jan. 4, 1945 in Ft. Smith, Ark. He then entered the United States Army in 1945 and was stationed in Tacoma, Washington. After VJ Day, he was stationed in the Occupation of Japan, working in the motor pool. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 27, 1946, as a first sergeant and returned to McAlester and began working in the car business. He worked for several dealerships in McAlester and was also a partner until 1949 when he opened his own used car business. He bought the GMC dealership in 1953 and added the Dodge dealership in 1962 and Chrysler-Plymouth in 1968. He opened his new building, Kelley Motor Company, on South Main in 1969 and remained there until selling his dealership in 1995 and then opening a used car business on South Main. During his entire automobile career he also raised cattle on his ranch near Stuart and was also in the oil and gas business. He was a member of the Stuart Church of Christ, the Harrison-Powers Post No. 79 American Legion, the Robert B. Thomas Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1098, the McAlester Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture and the Oklahoma and Pittsburg County Cattlemen's Association. Survivors include his wife, Ida Jane, three children, Karen Vaughn, Hershel Kelley, of Stuart and Karla Jan Kelley of Mead. He also had 8 grandchildren and an increasing number of great-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
