Pfc. Tyler J. Smith of Bethel, Maine was a 2004 graduate of Telstar Regional High School. He excelled in industrial arts, had worked with his father in construction and was very knowledgeable about that field. Tyler enlisted in the United States Army on December 27, 2005. and received his training at Fort Stewart in Georgia. He served as a Combat Engineer. His awards and decorations include, The Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Pending, Posthumous, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal, Global War On Terrorism Service Medal, Combat Action Badge, Weapons(Expert), and the Right Sleeve overseas Bar. He and his wife Heather married on May 28, 2006 at the Old Covered Bridge in Newry. He died at Forward Operating Base Falcon near Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when the base received indirect fire at age 22.
